Armando Broja’s serious injury pushes Chelsea into the transfer market

Chelsea are in the market for a new striker when the transfer window opens in January, as promising young striker Armando Broja has just suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the recent friendly against Aston Villa. The striker had to be stretchered off after just 22 minutes into the friendly. He has now been diagnosed with a torn Achilles tendon ligament. This comes as a big blow to manager Graham Potter, who has already been coming under pressure after a string of disappointing results for the club. Poor form leading up to the World Cup has led to Chelsea dropping down to 8th place in the league table.

The summer signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has not yet worked well after an initial good run of form. In the absence of recognised forwards, Armando Broja was getting substantial gametime and he was able to feature in 12 league appearances so far this season. He has scored once in the 12 matches although 10 of these games came as a substitute. A statement released by Chelsea said: “Having sustained a knee injury during the first half of Sunday’s friendly against Aston Villa, Armando underwent further assessment following the club’s return to England. Scan results from those assessments have unfortunately confirmed an anterior cruciate ligament rupture and that surgery will be required. Following the operation, Armando will work closely with the club’s medical department during his rehabilitation and is expected to miss the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.”

Chelsea have already been in negotiations with several transfer targets over the last few months. It is highly rumoured that Christopher Nkunku will be joining Stamford Bridge in the summer. The 21-year-old has come up with a string of excellent appearances in the German league. Even though Chelsea have had some bad moves in the past from German outfits, the blues are very keen on bringing Nkunku to the team.
