Reigning European champions Chelsea have sealed third place on the Premier League table ahead of the final day of this season after they came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City. Chelsea came into the Leicester City game with the knowledge that at least a point from the rescheduled game would be enough to secure a top-three spot since they have an unassailable goal difference advantage over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Chelsea came into the game on the back of the FA Cup final penalty shootout heartbreak against Liverpool. The Blues did well to hold their FA Cup final opponents to a goalless draw at the end of regulation and extra time. With the absence of a goal in 120 minutes, Liverpool and Chelsea had to settle for penalties to decide who will succeed Leicester City as FA Cup champions. Leicester City won the FA Cup last season by beating Chelsea 1-0 at home thanks to the long-range strike from Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans.
At the end of penalty shootout in the latest FA Cup final, Liverpool won 6-5 after Mason Mount missed during sudden death. The two teams had scored four each from the mandatory five penalties before the spot kick from Mount was saved by Brazil international Alisson Becker in the Liverpool goal.
For the Leicester City game,Chelsea went behind as early as the sixth minute when James Maddison scored for the Foxes. The lead lasted until the 34th minute when the fullback duo of Marcos Alonso and Daniel James combined for the latter to score the equaliser. Neither side could find the winner for the rest of the game.
With the point from the Leicester City game, Chelsea are now on 71 points thereby cementing third spot. For the Foxes, they are now two points off Wolves in eighth spot. Leicester City are in ninth position on the Premier League log.
