Senegal international central defender KalidouKoulibaly made his debut for Chelsea, but he could not prevent the two-time Champions League winners from suffering a big defeat to London rivals Arsenal in the Florida Cup final in Orlando, United States of America.
Chelsea made Koulibaly their second signing of the summer after Englishman Raheem Sterling when they paid €40m for him. The Senegal international centreback spent almost a decade at Italian Serie A side Napoli before Chelsea snapped him up earlier this month. He signed a three-year deal as a new Chelsea player this season with the option of an additional year. The 31-year-old snubbed the offer of a new deal from Napoli to sign for Chelsea.
Koulibaly came on for his first game in a Chelsea shirt as they were beaten by Arsenal convincingly in the Florida Cup. He played the last 17 minutes having replaced Brazil international Thiago Silva with seventeen minutes on the clock. Arsenal were leading 2-0 Koulibalywas introduced into the game and he went on to oversee a defence that conceded two more goals for a comprehensive performance for the Gunners.
For the Florida Cup final, Arsenal made a very good start as they forced Chelsea into making several mistakes. The Gunners were rewarded on 16 minutes when new signing Gabriel Jesusgave them the lead after a sloppy pass from centre back Trevor Chalobah in the Chelsea half. Arsenal ensured that they would go into the break with a two-goal lead when Gabriel Martineliprovided the assist for the second Gunners goal from skipper Martin Odegaard. In the second half, Bukayo Saka and substitute Albert-SambiLokonga scored for Arsenal to make it a convincing win for the North Londoners. Arsenal will start their season with an away Premier League game with London rivals Crystal Palace less than two weeks from now, while Chelsea are away to Everton for their own start to the new Premier League season.
