Mikel: Friendly defeats mean nothing

Despite being the big spenders of the Premier League this summer, there’s no doubt that Chelsea have started their pre-season campaign in disappointing fashion. The Blues have lost their last two friendly games, yet John Obi Mikel has warned supporters not to worry, claiming that there have been positives that can be built on.

Roberto Di Matteo has taken his players on a tour of the USA and as part of this, the Blues have been involved in several friendlies. While proceedings started positively following a 4-2 win over Seattle Sounders and a 1-1 draw against fellow big-spenders Paris Saint-Germain, results over recent times have been less than convincing. Di Matteo’s men lost 3-2 to MLS All-Stars, before then losing a successive fixture 1-0 against AC Milan.

While it is clear that pre-season has not been a complete success, Mikel has still managed to pick out positives. Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website, the player said, “I feel good, I think it was a good game for us. It was not the result we would have wanted but there are positives we can take and try to build on it. It is still pre-season and we have time to work on a few things before we get to the competitive games.”

While Mikel may view the results as quite meaningless at the moment, there’s no doubt that Roberto Di Matteo is going to be under immense amounts of pressure once the season kicks off. The Blues are one of the few teams in world football who have been more than happy to splash the cash over recent months and such investment always results in high expectations. Considering Roman Abramovich’s past record with managers, hopefully RDM can manage to improve the team’s fortunes for the start of the season.
